We got so lucky with formula b/c my mom retired from Abbott Laboratories, which makes Similac baby formula. So we drove down to Columbus where the company store is, and stocked up on Similac at the super cheap employee price--I think it was just a little more than half of the retail store price. So we bought about 3 cases of the powdered formula and it lasted until we were done with formula.

"i just have an issue with the idea that there may be substandard manufacturing practices in making the generic products.. it just seems like some corners may be being cut in order to produce it so cheap.."

The reason the Store Brand formula manufacturers can sell their products for so much less is because they aren't paying for all of the marketing/advertising that the National Name Brands are. There aren't any tv commercials, magazine ads, etc. Sure, they give out samples, but not on as large of a scale as the name brands do. They relay that cost onto the consumers.
Like Anna & Joe said, the FDA has such strict guidelines that all manufacturers must adhere to, there is no way to cut corners.

I work for PBM Products, a leading infant formula company that supplies store-brand infant formulas to leading retailers that include Walmart, Sam's Club, Target, Walgreens, Kroger, CVS, and Babies "R" Us. We believe parents should breastfeed their infants; if and when it comes time to supplement mother's milk with formula, we want parents to know that store brands will save them money without compromising nutritional quality. Our company urges parents to discuss infant feeding with a health-care professional and compare the labels of different formulas before making a decision on which brand to buy. Keep in mind that all formulas sold in the United States must adhere to the same strict guidelines determined by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. If you would like to learn more about saving money on baby formula, visit an online savings calculator at http://www.parentschoiceformula.com/baby-formula-savings-calculator.aspx.

That's just it - the FDA won't allow any formula maker to cut corners because we're dealing with infants here. Formula is a sole source of nutrition for an infant and is required by the Infant Formula Act to meet specific nutrient profiles. The only reason store brands are cheaper is because the national brands give away tons of free formula to hospitals and spend hundreds of millions of dollars each year on marketing and advertising.

while i totally agree with the above.. i just have an issue with the idea that there may be substandard manufacturing practices in making the generic products.. it just seems like some corners may be being cut in order to produce it so cheap..

with just a little bit of work, name brands can be the same cost, if not cheaper, than generic brands. in MANY cases, we were able to get national brands for free.. we never paid more than $12.99 for a can.. about half were $8.99, and a quarter were free.. that is a really great deal..

yes, i do agree that breast is best.. but for a good deal of people, this is not an option..

First of all there is no generic infant formula, and Consumer Reports puts it best in its Best Baby Products Guide:

β€œIs the store brand as good as the national brand? It has to be. According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), all formula marketed in the U.S. must meet the same nutrient specifications, which are set at levels to fulfill the needs of infants. Although infant-formula manufacturers may have their own proprietary formulations, brand-name and store-brand formula must contain at least the minimum levels of all nutrients specified in FDA regulations, without exceeding maximum levels, where those are specified.”

Everyone knows that breast milk is best... there's no denying that, but if you choose or need to breast feed for any reason, the Store Brand infant formula is a very good option!

I fed my girls Parent's Choice infant formula... Having twins, there was no way I could afford the national Name Brands... We did a side by side label comparison, and they were the same thing from ingredients to nutrition facts. We knew that we were able to save money while not sacrificing their nutrition. I highly recommend that anyone do the side by side comparison and see for yourself! You can save money and feed your baby the most complete nutrition you can...
