I recall that palm oil and coconut oil got a bad rap in the 70's and it practically vanished from the stores. You can't find palm oil, but only as an ingredient to something else. Politically palm oil is bad because they strip jungle forest in Indonesia to grow it. But coconut oil does not have that distinction.

Anyway, it has come to light that coconut oil has some heath benefits and on the whole is better than some other oils, despite saturated fats. I get flavacol at Smart & Final, where they also have the sticks of "butter" that will last 1000 years. It has all the colors and various oils that make theatre popcorns famous. (Well American Theatre) Those sticks of something like butter, have trans-fats, and well I'll pass on it.

So really friends the point is to approach the real thing, knowing full well you will never reach it. As said before if you want the real thing, go and get it at the theatre. If you want almost the real thing, this web page is pretty darn close without making something poisonous. I believe you should try to cook for your health at home as much as possible and reserve eating out to special events, good or bad for you.

Favacol does such a good job, that I believe peanut oil could get you pretty close. It's got a nutty flavor and I think it's pleasant.

At work we bought a real popcorn machine, like you see on wheels at the park. It's small but does the trick. We have tried flavacol both ways. It is meant to go with the oil, not afterwards. Smart & Final also has the complete packs or kits of oil, and popcorn that you cut and squeeze into the maker. This actually produces the exact result desired. However TRANS-FATS and it's more expensive.

Finally, the cheapest way to get actual theatre popcorn is to go to the car dealership. They have it for the customers. I get a serving or two every time I get my oil changed on the car, along with free donuts. If you don't want to buy a car, just pretend. I know it's stupid. I never go unless I have real business to attend to.

i never add the flavacol afterward.. if you it still lacks flavor, you might want to add a little more in the beginning.. just be careful, cuz it can get really salty if you add too much..

Can you explain how this works in more detail. Do you use half a cup of popcorn, about 3/4 teaspoon of coconut oil, and 3/4 of a teaspoon of flavacol with with the oil, cook i and then you're done or do you add more flavacol to the finished popcorn as well. If the latter is true, how much flavacol do you season the popcorn with? If not, then I don't think it tastes like movie theater popcorn because it lacks flavor.

Flavacol did the trick. I didn't use coconut oil but the Flavacol provided the taste I was missing out. Sure there are healthier products out there, but for this time, I wanted that authentic movie theater taste! I have a waning pro home popcorn machine! Thanks for the tips!

Very true Mark. Anyone who types a rant that long will be full of false information or is someone who is trying to show he knows what's best for the rest of us.
